Before the year's first Campuslife at Western Heights HS, we spoke about many things Head Principal Kandi Hunt wanted to see happen. The most important thing for her was that YFCSOKC brought the same heart for students that she was accustomed to seeing in the past at U.S. Grant. We believe in building relationships with young people to introduce them to Christ. In doing that, we intentionally connect with students and their life paths by exhibiting God's love.

We identified High School Junior Mykelah Scott early on as a candidate who could be an effective student leader on campus. Throughout the year, Mykelah was faithful with her attendance and inviting others to join in. She expressed a desire to go into nursing when she graduates in a few years. This presented our team with a unique opportunity to “do life” with her.

We reached out to Former YFC Volunteer & Registered Nurse Chanel Long, and just knew she would jump at the chance to get involved. Chanel has missed mentoring students as her schedule was always in conflict due to school and work. Having the opportunity to speak with students again made her feel purposeful. “God always granted me the perfect moment to spread light, love, and wisdom to His people,” said Chanel of the experience.

While speaking with Mykelah, Chanel said she noticed “a light flicker within her” while they were talking about nursing. She is planning to attend Langston University to pursue her studies and become the second person in her family to receive a college education. Chanel assured her that Langston has one of the best nursing programs in Oklahoma. As an alumna of Langston University, Chanel felt honored to be the representation she needed. No question was left unanswered, but more importantly, Chanel connected with Mykelah on a spiritual level. While this approach may not be the most evangelical, it is the most holistic and the one that is still proving highly effective for YFCSOKC after all these years. We seek to cultivate great moments of connection and community for young people through the Campuslife Ministry. The week after meeting with Chanel, Mykelah and her entire family attended our Partner Church, Kingdom City Church. Mykelah is set to embark on a spiritual journey over the next summer and is looking forward to her senior year as a Campus Life Core Student Leader.
